Course Structure

Private Pilot Certificate (6 Weeks)

Training for the private pilot certificate is over a six week period in a Glass Cockpit Diamond DA40 aircraft.   By the end of this portion of the training, you will have approximately 50 hours of flight time and be qualified to fly by yourself as a private pilot.

Experience Building (6 Weeks)

On completion of your private pilot certificate, you will   undergo a period of experience building.   This will involve developing your flying skills undertaking a variety of cross country flights.   During this time, you will be continually assessed and assisted to further develop your flying ability.

Multi Engine Rating (2 Weeks)

After approximately 150 hours total flight time, you will transition to flying a multi engine aircraft and attain your multi engine rating.   This is done in a Diamond  DA42   Twinstar.   This aircraft runs on Jet Fuel, has a full Glass Cockpit and is the newest, most advanced multi-engine aircraft available for flight training.

Instrument Rating (6 Weeks)

Your instrument training is accomplished in the DA42 Twinstar and our Twinstar Level 5 Flight Training Device.   By training for your initial instrument in a multi engine aircraft, you will be better prepared and qualified to progress to a commercial flight environment.

Crew Resource Management (CRM) & Commercial Certificate (4 Weeks)

Our CRM course develops the skills required to operate in a multi crew environment while your commercial flight training builds upon the skills, knowledge and experience gained from the previous training modules. Our focus on line oriented training will prepare you for real world operation as a commercial pilot.

During your training, we teach you to make the best of the technology available in the aircraft without becoming dependent upon it.

The PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATE is composed of a number of distinct phases, these include:
1.            Aircraft general handling
2.            First solo
3.            Proficiency development, night operations
4.            Cross country navigation
5.            First Solo Cross Country
6.            Flight Skill Consolidation
7.            Practical Test

It is also necessary to pass a knowledge test prior to taking the practical test.   Study for the knowledge test is a combination of self study (books, CD ROMS, DVD) and class room based training from a flight instructor.

Pilot Knowledge test subject areas
Aircraft Systems and Aerodynamics, Airport, ATC operations, Airspace, Aviation Regulations, Airplane Performance and Weight and Balance, Aeromedical Factors, Weather and Weather Services, Navigation, Navigation Systems and Charts, Cross Country Flight Planning, Single Pilot Cockpit Resource Management.

The MULTI ENGINE RATING is composed of a number of phases, these include:

1.            Aircraft general handling
2.            Normal Operations
3.            Abnormal and Emergency Operations
4.            Single Engine Operations

Aeronautical Knowledge Areas

Aircraft Systems and Multi Engine Aerodynamics, Airplane Performance, Limitations and Weight and Balance, Takeoff Profile and Flight Profile planning,  Single Pilot Cockpit Resource Management.

Our FAA approved level 5 Flight Training Device allows you to benefit from the type of equipment normally reserved for airline and corporate pilots. This allows us to train more effectively and efficiently to a greater level of proficiency.

The instrument rating is composed of a number of distinct phases, these include: -

  1. Basic Attitude Instrument Flying
  2. Radio Navigation (including GPS)
  3. Holding Procedures and DME Arcs
  4. Approach Procedures
  5. Cross Country IFR Procedures
  6. Abnormal and Emergency Procedures training

Pilot Knowledge Test Subject Areas

Aircraft Systems related to IFR, ATC procedures, IFR Regulations, Weather and Weather Services, IFR Navigation Systems and Charts, Cross Country Flight Planning, Single Pilot Cockpit Resource Management. Departure, Arrival and Approach procedures, IFR related abnormal and emergency procedures.

Optional – JAR ATPL Examinations
Angel City Flyers has a better way to do the ATPL examinations. Traditionally, the ATPLs are undertaken after the candidate attains a private pilot certificate but before being exposed to complex aircraft operations and instrument flying experience. This causes the ATPL theoretical examinations to be more difficult and academic then necessary. This is because the candidate has little practical exposure to the procedures, systems and operations dealt with in the theoretical exams. Furthermore, the knowledge attained tends to be more readily forgotten as there is no practical foundation to the academics.
At Angel City Flyers, the ATPL theoretical exams are integrated into the schedule for the professional pilot course.
