Instrument Rating

An instrument rating allows pilots to broaden their flying horizons from a proficiency as well as a privilege standpoint.

At Angel City Flyers, your training for the instrument rating is conducted in a state of the art Diamond DA40 Diamond Star or DA42 Twin Star.   You may also request to train in your own aircraft.

During your training, we teach you to make the best of the technology available in the aircraft without becoming dependent upon it.   Our emphasis on single pilot resource management and scenario based training ensures you are prepared to operate safely and confidently in real world IFR.

Our FAA approved level 5 Flight Training Device allows you to benefit from the type of equipment normally reserved for airline and corporate pilots, making training more effective and efficient.

The instrument rating is composed of a number of distinct phases, these include:

  1. Basic Attitude Instrument Flying
  2. Radio Navigation (including GPS)
  3. Holding Procedures and DME Arcs
  4. Approach Procedures
  5. Cross Country IFR Procedures
  6. Abnormal and Emergency Procedures Training

It is also necessary to pass a knowledge test prior to taking the practical test. Knowledge test preparation is a combination of self study (books, CD ROMS, DVD) and classroom based training from a flight instructor.

Prerequisites for Beginning Your Training

  1. 47 hours cross country PIC time
  2. Pilot certificate and current medical
